My experience applying to tech jobs made me realize how much time consuming and repetitive it was for candidates to fill out multi-page job applications. To add to this frustration, while working in BigTech and at startups I noticed how recruitment software was aimed at making life easy for recruiters and sourcers but had minimal features to assist me in conducting coding interviews or filter resumes of candidates with a specific skillset.
Ad-hoc solutions and inefficient, tedious practices that I witnessed, both as an interviewer and as an interviewee, included:
- Monotonously searching through every candidate's resume for keywords of interest.
- Using Google Docs to have candidates type the code out with no way to verify its operation.
- Scrounging the web to find free live coding platforms (which introduced me to the fantastic resources - codebunk.com, regex101.com, online SQL editors, etc).
- Giving up on finding coding platforms that supported programming languages that are commonly used in the hardware industry, such as, Verilog, VHDL and Tcl.
Only a few lucky companies could afford commercial coding assessment solutions which are more of a luxury and in no way a drop-in replacement for recruitment software.
